Tips for Moving in the Winter

Moving is stressful in the best weather circumstances, so it can be particularly tough if you are moving during the winter months. Snow, cold and ice can all cause challenges to arise. Our friends at Zaarly have a few tips on making your winter move go smoothly and as stress-free as possible!

Start Packing Early

You’ll want to start the packing process well in advance. Renting a portable storage container can be a big help — you’ll just want to be sure that the container is made from sturdy material that can easily handle snow and freezing temperatures.

Prep Your Home

Winter weather can making moving more dangerous. Make sure that you stay on top of clearing snow and ice from stairs and walkways. Clear icicles from windows. Stock up on salt and sand just in case moving day is a little slippery.

For the inside of your home, lay down thick plastic sheeting to protect your floors. You’ll be in and out of your house frequently, tracking in dirt, mud and snow. The last thing you want to worry about is tackling carpet stains.

Take Care of Your Movers

While it’s not required, hiring movers in the winter might be your safest option. They will have the equipment and manpower and will be able to anticipate any potential issues.

Having a hot pot of coffee, some hot chocolate or hot apple cider is always appreciated!

Prepare your New Home

Just like you prepared your former home, you’ll want to make sure that your new home is ready! Have all the walkways clear and ice-free. Cover your floors with thick plastic sheets.

Keep in mind that it gets darker earlier. Plan your move earlier in the day so that you are working with as much natural light as possible. It’s also a good idea to have some extra lightbulbs on hand and to get some of your lamps set up first thing so you can see where you are going the first night in your new home.
