Questions to Ask a Realtor—BEFORE You Hire Them

Finding a good realtor can make all the difference in the world when buying and selling a home.  You want someone you trust—who meets your high expectations.

Don’t be afraid to ask a few questions upfront, before you make that important decision.  A good agent will have no problem answering them.

Here are 6 good questions to ask any real estate agent—before hiring them.

Are you licensed in my area?

Be specific about where you want to buy—or sell—a home. What city and state? If you are looking to buy a home in both Missouri and Kansas, then make sure the realtor is licensed in both states.

Do you know the Kansas City area? Which neighborhoods?

If you’re moving to the Kansas City area (or even just moving across town), make sure your realtor is knowledgeable about the property values in the neighborhood you’re targeting. Ask for a report on current market trends and pricing in the neighborhood where you’re buying or selling.

Tell me more about your experience.

Ask the realtor how many homes they’ve closed in the last 12 months, and how many years they’ve been in business. Or, what type of sales background do they have to make them a strong negotiator? Even if you’re interviewing someone who is just starting a career in real estate, they have had hours and hours of training. As an example, all ReeceNichols agents go through extensive pre-licensing training and coaching, and receive continuing education and mentoring in the field of real estate from other successful agents and legal experts.

Will I be working directly with you, throughout the process?

Find out who will help you search for the right property and close the sale, from beginning to end. For example, at ReeceNichols, the agents not only help you plan, prepare for, and negotiate the home sale—but also have home mortgage and home warranty services available in-house, so you can get everything under 1 roof.

How will you communicate with me?

Make sure that your realtor communicates with you as quickly as possible in the way you prefer. Ask your agent if they will be using the latest digital technology to search for new listings, and if they will use email and e-signatures for finalizing the paperwork. These handy tools speed up response time to make sure you don’t lose a home or buyer that you really want.

How do you market your home listings?

If you’re selling a home, then you’ll want a realtor with a wide “reach”—so your home gets seen by as many buyers as possible. A good real estate agent will find potential buyers through property signage, ads, web listings, home search apps, newsletters, and personal referral.
